Frequently Asked Questions
When is the Red 3 deadline?
Foods must comply by January 15, 2027 (FDA). California's own ban starts January 1, 2027, with civil penalties — two weeks earlier.
What about the other six dyes?
The FDA has asked industry to phase out six more petroleum-based dyes — a voluntary request, not a ban. Major brands have already announced reformulations publicly.
What labeling changes are coming?
The updated "healthy" claim rule is final, with compliance by February 25, 2028. A front-of-package nutrition box is proposed but not final. Several state rules are in legal flux.
